Iria was born in the mid-seventh century, in the ancient city of Nabancia. Her beauty was not unnoticed, and many courted her, among them Friar Remígio, her spiritual monk, and Britaldo, son of the city governor. But from an early age, Iria wanted to consecrate herself to God. Feeling rejected, Friar Remígio gave her an infusion that made her swell, looking pregnant. Feeling that he was being betrayed, Britaldo had Iria killed while she prayed by the Nabão River. Her body was dragged by the river to Santarém where, by miracle, a tomb appeared and her body remained there. Iria is the patroness saint of Tomar and her feast day is October 20th.
