The devotion to Our Lady of Conception dates back to the time of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, who had a pontifical Mass to honor and thank Our Lady, for the conquest of Lisbon to the Moors. Later, to show his gratitude for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira ordered the construction of the Church of Our Lady of the Castle in Vila Viçosa and commissioned an image of Our Lady of Conception to be put there and that it could be venerated by all. In 1646, after the restoration of Portugal's independence, D. João IV offered the Portuguese crown to Our Lady of the Conception and proclaimed her Patroness and Queen of Portugal. The Immaculate Conception's feast day is December 8th.
