João Heitor de Brito was born in 1647, in a Christian family, in Lisbon, Portugal. From an early age he showed a huge desire to devote his life to spreading the word of God. At fourteen he entered the Society of Jesus and at twenty-six he was ordained a priest. At the same time, he travelled to India as an evangelizing missionary. Throughout his years in India, he suffered torture and persecution but never failed to preach the Gospel with courage and determination. He was killed in 1697. St. John de Brito was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1852 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947. His feast day is February 4th.
